Many become allies and friends, joining the effort to rebuild and foster the new light by becoming part of a burgeoning town where trade and crafting slowly grow and begin to thrive. Along the way, the hero will also meet other survivors who need help, perhaps in the gathering of specific items or tracking down a family member.
A primary part of the adventure involves exploring the game's open yet labyrinthine world, discovering and collecting many weapons and resources, and fighting enemies via a challenging block, dodge, and strike combat system that demands caution and forethought. But dark forces are gathering to stop this rebirth, and the player's character has embarked on a mission to stop them. But now the Ashen has begun a process of rebirth, giving new hope to the few who have endured. Once bathed in life-giving light by a creature known as the Ashen, the world has suffered through an age of darkness when evil things flourished and humanity dwindled. ASHEN is a highly stylized fantasy role-playing game (RPG) in which the player's character is one of just a handful of surviving humans.
